A reader going by the online name of Samuraidog98 offered up a review of the Gutter Clutter Buster gutter cleaning tool. We’ve seen tools like this advertised, and they look like they should work reasonably well. The tool basically consists of ultra-high technology (not really)… they are just a couple of plastic tubes. The tubes attach to your shop vac in order to give you the necessary reach up to your gutters. The top tube is curved so that you can stick it into your gutters to clean them out. Seems reasonable, right?

Well Samuraidog98 has some video that shows otherwise. Check it out for yourself, and then read his written review below.

His vacuum really should be sufficient. 6.5HP is pretty strong so I’m not sure what is going on here. Is it possible that his vacuum has some kind of obstruction that is limiting the airflow? Here is what Samuraidog98 had to say about his experience.

This is my review of the Gutter Clutter Buster.

Cost of GCB: $59.99 (kit incl. 2 extensions) + $15 shipping.
Vacuum: Ridgid 16 gallon 6.5HP wet/dry vac. (Model WD1670)
Type of leaves: Maple, Ash, White Oak, and Hickory (?).

As you can see in the video, I get a LOT of leaves in my gutters. So, I was really hopeful that this device would work as advertised and keep me from having to climb the ladder to clean out my gutters.

Although this video clip only shows about ten minutes of the GCB in use, I initially used the GCB for about an hour on a ten ft. long section of gutters before realizing that it wasn’t going to work as I’d hoped. As you can see in the video, the GCB easily clogs. Although the pipes aren’t too heavy, my arms got really tired after using it for such a long time with limited results.

I can’t really fault the wet/dry vac. When I used it to vacuum out my car, it seemed to have lots of suction power (read the reviews of this vac on amazon.com or homedepot.com).

I contacted the seller telling them about the difficulties I was having with their product. I was told that I need to use at least a 5HP wet/dry vac. After telling them that I was using a highly-rated Ridgid 6.5HP vac, I was told that they’ve sold thousands of the GCB and that I was the very first person to ever complain about a clogging problem, so I “had to be using the product incorrectly.” I asked for a refund, but was told that I could only return the product (minus shipping) as long as it has no scratches or damage (must look like it is new so it can be sold as new). Since shingles are like sandpaper, it is nearly impossible to use this device without scratching it!

I told them that I was highly dissatisfied with the GCB and that I’d do a review of the product and post it online. I was then threatened with a lawsuit if I posted anything negative about their product on the web.

Perhaps there are some satisfied users out there. I was really hopeful that this product would work and I wanted to give it a positive review, but the GCB just didn’t work for me.

The Gutter Clutter Buster website has a video of the product in action and it appears to work. However, the geographic location is most likely Florida, and the leaves being vacuumed are tropical… much smaller and narrower than the GCB pipe opening. They certainly aren’t trying to vacuum large Maple or Oak leaves in that video. We are up here in New England and feel that we would, unfortunately, have the exact same experience as Samuraidog98.

As far as we can tell, the Gutter Clutter Buster maker is trying to do good… and they believe in their product. And it’s American made! It just seems that they might be lacking a bit in the customer service arena, at least in this particular instance. If an honest customer is truly that unhappy with your product, it seems that the right thing to do would be to offer some kind of assistance.

We would love to hear about other GCB experiences both good and bad. What are you thoughts? Is Samuraidog98 doing anything wrong? Do you think that the alleged treatment from the Gutter Clutter Buster manufacturer represents adequate customer service?

Here’s a little teaser we found on YouTube from Consumer Reports. This is a very small video clip, but it almost says it all. I’ve read many reviews of the iRobot Looj, and they are never favorable. Too bad.

Here are some additional reader comments:

A recent article by Consumer Reports has made it into on-line news and news radio. The Looj has been grouped into a bunch of products that don’t work as well as advertised such as the Snuggie, Sham-wow, and Slap-Chop.

One thing they mentioned is the Looj requires multiple passes and throws debris back up on the roof. The next rain will but the debris right back in the gutter. I’m not sure what the infomercial claims.

And here’s another from the other side:

For what it’s worth….

I subscribe to Consumer Reports and find its information usually helpful, though sometimes wrong–as in the case of the Looj. I used a Looj on my 1-year-old gutters last fall. I found the Looj to be a useful tool, mostly because I made fewer trips moving and climbing up and down a ladder. Also, the Looj worked because my gutters did not have a lot of crud from years of neglect.

Perhaps, Consumer Reports simply mirrored the unrealistic expectations that many consumers have. However, as a testing lab and consumer advocate, it has a responsibility to tear down those unrealistic expectations and not evaluate a product through the lens of sci-fi expectations.

I think that with the Looj, Consumer Reports missed the point.

Spring is coming fast. Along with the great weather comes lots of rain. Make sure your gutters are in good shape before the first major rain storm, and you’ll be a happy homeowner.

Check out this handy video that explains the proceed such that any gutter newbie can take on the job. It’s basically an advertisement from Lowes, but it still contains some great information and footage.

Cleaning gutters isn’t fun, but the payoff in water damage prevention is huge.
